Baker Affleck team member’s contribution to the children of India
The practice of yoga “contains within it a spirit of service, to work selflessly for the good of all mankind,” according to the Shri K Pattabhi Jois Charitable Trust, a charity formed to honour the yoga teacher and guru of ashtanga yoga. It is with this in mind that this coming August, yoga enthusiast Christian Graham will be volunteering his spare time by working for the charity by helping develop young minds in Southern India.
Venturing to the Indian city of Mysore, Christian will take part in the Pratham program which was first initiated by UNICEF in 1994 with 2,000 children in Mumbai and has now increased to over a million children across India.
As part of his “hands-on” contribution to the welfare of disadvantaged children, Christian will be donating his time by teaching English to both young children and unemployed women so that they may one day be able to teach others. “The smallest donations go a long way in Indian rupees and the reward comes with every smile from the kids…It is the highlight of my year,” says Christian, who enjoys travelling each year to Mysore to further his yoga studies.
The Pratham Mysore program, with the over-arching mission of "Every Child in School and Learning Well", now reaches out to thousands of children across 14 slum locations in India. It promotes mental and physical rehabilitation, spiritual and educational development and working towards providing medical and occupational aid and shelter to those in need.
Not everyone can donate time to such worthy causes but with this financial year over, it may be time to consider donating money to a cause such as Pratham Mysore. As a business, there are a plenty of advantages to donating money, which the skilled accountants at Baker Affleck can help you with.
